The parable of the unmerciful servant
In this story Jesus talks about forgiveness. Most of us have heard this story and know we are supposed to forgive. It is something that God wants us to do. However I did not realize what a command it truly was. When the servant that has been forgiven is unmerciful and throws his servant in jail that cannot pay back a much smaller amount than he was just forgiven the king throws him in jail not just to sit and rot but is viciously tortured. Look at verse 35: “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother form your heart”. That is not just you should forgive your brother, this is if you do not forgive bad things will come of it. You will not go unpunished. Jesus puts a high importance and urgency in the fact that forgiveness is not a task to be taken lightly. It has been consequences whether you forgive or not.
Forgiveness does not show that the deed was okay, and it does not mean that your going to trust that person. But forgiveness is having mercy. If God had not been merciful and forgiven us, then we would be ultimately doomed to hell for an eternity. Should we not show the same mercy we have been shown?
